Vincent Van Duysen joined forces with Serax to create a sofa collection representing the DNA of both institutions. Vincent Van Duysen: “I thought it would be a nice idea if we could translate a custom-made product I very often produce in my projects into an edition piece. That’s how this collection started to take shape.” The name Rudolph was derived from Rudolf Michael Schindler, a major protagonist of mid-century American modernism. “I admire him a lot. The Mid-century style is very inspirational for my work; think of the typical built-in banquettes lining modern interiors. But the most significant inspiration for this collection was the sofa I have in my home in Portugal because of its proportions, lines, and the serenity you feel when looking at it or sitting on it.
Vincent Van Duysen: “Furniture should never clamour for attention, it should become one with its surroundings, unnoticed. It is the users who add colour.”The August collection by Vincent Van Duysen for Serax is made of aluminium and it is available with a black, eucalyptus green or sand powder coating. This makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The chairs, lounge chair, tables and sunbeds articulate the sheer simplicity of the monastic life they were inspired by. The wider, slightly lower proportions are of this day and age and contribute modern- day comfort.
A furniture design by Marie Michielssen always starts with a series of sketches on paper. With mathematical precision, she builds up the volumes. The proportions must be perfect and adapted to suit the human body. For the Valerie lounge chair, she started from an elliptical base to which she added two rectangular surfaces, a seat and back at a perfect angle that makes it possible to sit comfortably. She chose lacquered steel so that Valerie can be used both outside and inside. She also likes steel because it is an honest, somewhat brutal material. What you see is what you get. The optional seat cushion adds extra comfort. The fabric is hand-woven and made in Belgium and was chosen by Marie for its tactile impact.
The upholstery fabrics for the indoor/outdoor sofas and cushions of the Bea Mombaers collection are produced by a Belgian weaving mill with a long-standing history. The mill has been weaving quality fabrics for prominent national and international customers for five generations already. The cushion covers are locally manufactured as well, making this a 100 percent Belgian story.
