Catherine Martin

Catherine Martin is an Academy Award-winning costume, production and homeware designer, renowned for the richly layered visual worlds she creates alongside filmmaker Baz Luhrmann. For more than three decades, she has shaped the distinctive aesthetic of productions including Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby and Elvis. Her work has earned her four Academy Awards and established her as one of contemporary cinema’s most influential visual designers.
Through Catherine Martin Designs, she brings her expressive, maximalist aesthetic to interiors, textiles, wallpapers and homeware. Her work combines decoration, storytelling and historical references, shaped by her French-Australian background and fascination with travel and culture.

In 2026, Martin translated this cinematic approach into ceramics for Serax with the Palm and Flamboyance collections. Spanning decorative objects, vases and lighting, the collections capture her signature use of colour, ornamentation and character.
