German designer Sebastian Herkner has won just about every prestigious design award in his career, a feat he largely owes to his keen eye for innovative material combinations and textures. For his collection for Serax, called Uala, Herkner went one step further, creating an elegant porcelain lamp with tropical allure.

Herkner always likes to start from the material in his creative process, examining its possibilities and limitations and investigating the user’s experience of the material. For the Uala lamp, he chose to use porcelain, albeit in a different way. A fragile and rigid material, porcelain is not usually associated with the movement of pleats and folds. Herkner’s organic, intensely pleated shape creates an interesting visual tension.
