Belgian designer Jonas Van Put is known for always offering a different take on the objects we use in daily life. He has now reinterpreted an object most of us are familiar with, namely the fruit bowl. “Whenever I buy fruit, I feel the urge to line up the fruit on my kitchen counter, to display it”, says van Put. That is how he was inspired to design L-Tray, a shelf consisting of nothing more than a standard steel L-shaped angle profile on which to display your fruit.
Designer
Designer Jonas Van Put shot to instant fame with his graduation project Observer, a chair on a galvanised steel structure almost five metres high that offers a new view of the world. It captured what still defines his work today: simple, pared-down designs with a poetic twist. After three years at an interior design firm, he founded his own studio in 2019 to focus on personal work and custom metalwork. “Metal can bear a lot of weight with a minimal structure,” he says.
His design leans towards minimalism, aiming for legible objects where nothing is hidden. Inspired by Richard Serra’s Verb List, with verbs like roll, fold, flip and mill, Van Put blends architecture, design and art. Some pieces are functional, others sculptural, but all fuel the imagination
